How we chose

The work behind the recommendations.

No press releases, no sponsored inclusions. Every course on this list was taken start to finish by a beginner — so the trade-offs we flag are the ones you'll actually hit.

We took them ourselves

Every course was completed start to finish by someone who'd never touched the craft before.

Beginner-first scoring

We scored on pace, clarity, what you actually make, and how well each course handles the bits where beginners get stuck.

Equipment honesty

We checked what kit each course needs and whether the instructor's recommendations are actually the best options.

Updated regularly

We re-check courses every 6 months. Prices change, platforms change, and new courses launch.

Bella Coco

Complete Beginner Crochet

The best beginner crochet course we've found. Bella Coco assumes you know nothing and takes you from your first slip knot to a finished scarf — at a pace that actually lets you keep up.

What we liked

Bella Coco is genuinely one of the best crochet teachers online. She talks to you like a friend, pauses at the right moments, and shows close-ups exactly when you need them. By lesson 7 you're making a real dishcloth — not just practising chains into thin air. The pace is gentle without being slow, and she's brilliant at predicting where you'll get stuck.

Worth knowing

Lessons 4 and 5 move noticeably faster than the rest — this is where most beginners struggle with tension and counting. If you hit a wall here, slow down and rewatch those two before moving on. The scarf project at the end is also quite plain — it teaches the skills well, but you might want to pick a more exciting second project from our beginner projects page.

TL Yarn Crafts

Crochet 101

Slightly more formal than Bella Coco's course. Better for people who want a clear learning path and a granny square project at the end.

What we liked

More formal structure suits people who want clear progression. The granny square project at the end is genuinely satisfying and teaches joining techniques well. Production is excellent and the written pattern handouts are a nice touch.

Worth knowing

Slightly less personality than Bella Coco. If you want warmth and chat, this might feel a bit classroom-y. A couple of the middle lessons drag slightly — fine to double speed through them.

You’ll make: Practice squares and a finished granny square

Common questions

Do I need a paid course, or can I learn from YouTube?
You can learn from YouTube — our "best free" pick is genuinely great. A paid course saves time and is more structured, but it's not essential.
Which platform is best — Skillshare or Domestika?
Skillshare is subscription-based (great if you'll try multiple courses). Domestika is one-off purchase (better if you just want one course and done).
How do I know which course is right for me?
If you've never held a hook, start with our top pick. If you prefer more structure, go with our most-structured pick. If you want free, our YouTube pick will get you started.
