Yarn choice is one of the things new makers overthink the most. You don’t need the expensive stuff to learn — you need something smooth, light-coloured and around DK/aran weight. Here’s what we’d actually buy.

Natural cotton with clear stitch definition. A nicer hand-feel than acrylic and perfect if you want your finished piece to look a bit more “proper”.
Marriner DK acrylic

The honest budget pick. Slightly more squeaky than Paintbox, but stitches cleanly and comes in plenty of colours. Totally fine for practice pieces.

Fluffy novelty yarns (mohair, bouclé, eyelash)
They look beautiful in the shop but hide every stitch. You’ll lose count within three rows. Save them for when you’re confident.
What matters
What actually makes a good beginner yarn
Weight
DK or aran. Chunky is tempting but the stitches come out enormous; thin yarn is fiddly to learn with.
Fibre
Smooth acrylic or cotton. Avoid anything fluffy or textured while you’re learning.
Colour
Light or medium. Black and navy yarn hide your stitches.
Twist
A tight, even twist stops the yarn splitting when you’re stitching into it. Cheap yarn sometimes untwists mid-row.

- Is acrylic yarn cheating?
- Absolutely not. Acrylic is affordable, machine-washable, and brilliant for practice. Natural fibres come later if you want them.
- What does ‘DK weight’ mean?
- Double-knit weight — a medium-weight yarn that works with 4–5mm hooks or needles. It’s the standard beginner weight.
- Where should I buy yarn?
- Online from Wool Warehouse, LoveCrafts or Deramores for range and price. Local yarn shops for advice and quality.
