01 · The basics

What is crochet?

Crochet is a way of making fabric from yarn using a single hook. Unlike knitting (which uses two needles and manages many stitches at once), crochet works one stitch at a time — which makes it more forgiving when you’re learning.

You can make almost anything with crochet: scarves, blankets, bags, toys, hats, home decor, even clothing. Most beginners start with something small and flat — like a dishcloth — and work up from there.

02 · The honest answer

Is crochet hard to learn?

The short answer

No. Crochet is one of the easier crafts to pick up. Most beginners can make a chain and their first stitches within an hour, and a simple finished piece within a weekend. The tricky part isn't the skill — it's finding the right course and not getting overwhelmed by conflicting advice.

Realistic timeline

  • First hourChain stitch and first rows of single crochet
  • Day 2–3Consistent stitches, starting to build muscle memory
  • End of week 1A finished dishcloth or simple square
  • Week 2–3A scarf, headband, or simple bag
  • Month 2–3Amigurumi toys, granny squares, hats

04 · The course

Choosing your first course

We’ve reviewed the most popular beginner crochet courses and narrowed it down to three — each suits a different way of learning.

05 · The core skills

The basic stitches you’ll learn first

Overview, not tutorial. Your course teaches the how. This is the what and why.

Chain stitch (ch)

The foundation. A simple loop-through-loop.

First thing you'll learn

Slip stitch (sl st)

Used for joining and finishing.

Very easy

Single crochet (sc)

The most basic fabric stitch. Tight, dense fabric.

Easy — practise with rows

Double crochet (dc)

Taller stitch, works up faster. More open, drapey.

Easy once sc is solid

06 · Sidestep these

Common mistakes (and how to avoid them)

Every beginner makes a version of these. Knowing them before you start halves the frustration.

  • Gripping too tight

Your hook should move freely. If your hand aches after 10 minutes, consciously relax every few rows.

  • Losing stitch count

Use stitch markers at the start of each row. Count stitches at the end of every row until it's automatic.

  • Skipping the first or last stitch

This is why scarves come out triangular. Your course will clarify how turning chains work.

  • Using dark yarn to learn

Dark yarn makes it hard to see your stitches. Start with a light or medium colour.

  • Trying too complex a first project

Start with a dishcloth. Quick wins build confidence. Complex projects before you're ready build frustration.

Common questions

Is crochet hard to learn?
No. Most beginners can make a simple chain and single crochet within their first hour. A finished dishcloth is realistic within a weekend.
How much does it cost to start?
About £15–20 for a hook, yarn, and stitch markers. That's everything you need for your first course.
Do I need a course, or can I learn from YouTube?
You can learn from YouTube, but a structured course saves time and frustration. We recommend Bella Coco's Skillshare course — it's the best we've tested.
What's the difference between crochet and knitting?
Crochet uses one hook and one active loop at a time. Knitting uses two needles and manages many stitches. Most beginners find crochet easier to start.
